Class Visitation Report

The main topic was “Motivation”. The professor defined the motivation first, and then identified a variety of motivations for participation in recreation. She kept asking students questions and everyone was involved in the class. One of the topics is recreation in the lives of children. She mentioned that overscheduled child and asked us did we take some classes such as piano, violin classes after school. It recalls me when I was young; I went to cram school after class and to do homework or to review the lessons there. Many people think children will stand pressures. Indeed, I didn’t feel many pressures. I made lots of friends and the teacher taught me how to write my homework. And she taught us Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and some motivation concepts which I learned that before, so I am familiar with these parts.

    Name: JI HOON YI
    Class: CS5
    Instructor: Anthony & Nency
    Date & Time: 3/18/2009, 02:00pm-: 03:30am Petty building.
    Course Title: Astronomy, Solar system.
    Professor: Dr. Steve Danford.

    Summary:
This was my first visitation class in CS 5. I was less confident because I was already frustrated in CS 4 visitation class. In the last term, it was really hard to understand the whole class. Maybe the reason was that I didn’t pay attention to searching courses and my listening skill also poor. So I was really nervous when I reached classroom. However, the professor made my mind calm down.
For the first visitation class, I chose ‘solar system’, the reason why I chose this class was I was interested of this topic, and my teacher who was Anthony said that I couldn’t attend class which similar to my major. That’s why I chose the Astronomy class.
Firstly, I thought that Astronomy is not too difficult to me, but it was my misunderstood. Although, when I was young, I really liked stars and planets, but solar system’s major course was very hard to understand. I could just guess what Professor was taking about. However, after class, the professor Danford called me, because asked me which parts was difficult to me. Although the class was finished, he spent time make me understood. I really moved his kindness. His lecture was about introduction of solar system, and the day’s topic was differences between planet and dwarf planet. In normal planet is in orbit around the Sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit. However, in dwarf planet case, most thing is similar to normal planet’s that, but dwarf planet has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite. That’s why, Pluto is no longer a major planet, now it is a Plutoid. The reasons are that Pluto circles the Sun in an oblong orbit overlapping the orbit of Neptune's and the Plutoid doesn’t has enough gravity to drag others planetesmel.

It was really nice first visitation class that I could understand what the real consisting of solar system is. Most of all, I appreciated professor’s kindness so I asked that I can participate in the class once again. “Of course, it’s my pleasure” he replied. So I promised that I can attend to class next week again. It was really wonderful first experience.

    Name: JI HOON YI
    Class: CS5
    Instructor: Anthony & Nency
    Date & Time: 3/25/2009, 02:00pm-: 03:30am Petty building.
    Course Title: Astronomy, Solar system.
    Professor: Dr. Steve Danford.

    Summary:
The reason why I chose this class again was that I was permission from professor and I had more interested of topic. At that time, I wasn’t nervous like first time, because I already had been before the class. Furthermore, by receiving syllabus from professor and emailing about the day’s lecture from professor, I could preview about the day’s topic.

Topic of class was about Moon. In the lecture, by comparing between moon and earth, I realized what the moon is such as Moon’s diameter, mass, volume, and even basic knowledge, on average, moon reflects about 7% of the incident sunlight. In addition, the professor emphasized a common misconception is that the phases of the Moon are caused by the shadow of the Earth. Most of all, in the class, I thought that the most important part is rotation of moon. The Moon always presents the same face towards Earth. Another common misconception is that this means that the Moon does not rotate. However, in order to keep the same face toward Earth, the Moon must rotate once every orbit. The far side of the Moon is not dark, it gets just as much sunlight as the near side. These reasons, The “Dark Side” of the Moon should really be called the “Far Side,” because of the far side gets just as much light as the near side. For example, during a new moon, the near side of the Moon is dark, and the far side of the Moon is fully illuminated.

The class was also amazing, wonderful. I realized why a lot of students attended Dr Danford’s class because the professor had passion of Astronomy. I really attended to the class once again. However, actually it was sorry for Professor, and I didn’t want to bother him. Even though I was Interlink student, professor treated me very politely. I really appreciated that until now.

    Class visitation Report

    Class: CS5
    Instructor: Anthony & Nency
    Date & Time: 4/3/2009, 10:00am-: 11:30pm, 347 HEHP Building
Course Title: Department of Recreation, Tourism & Hospitality Management.
    Professor: Dr. Bonnie M. Canziani

    Summary:
Although, I have sent mail to a lot of professors, I could not choose the class easily. Because some class started same time with interlink class, and some professors email me little late, so I had to check my email every morning. Finally, I was permitted by professor who major was Department of Recreation. I didn’t have any burden about class, because frankly speaking, I thought recreation or hospitality classes would be easier to understand and also interesting. However, it was also my illusion which should be realized earlier. The class was more close economics, management, sociology or politics than recreation and tourism. In other word, I felt that I was in economics class.

.In fact, I didn’t have any idea about economic and management something like that. However, I tried to understand and take some notes. According to Dr Bonnie, function of worldwide franchise is really important to attract multicultural tourists in marketing. Since hotels or restaurants are responsible for people’s shelter and provider of meal, those franchises became more relative than before, Moreover, by global companies became popular, they are attempting to place functions or operations strategically where they will be most efficient. The other important thing is using culture. It can be a way to more attract tourists. The professor showed us an example of China. Tourists stay and take a rest in the Chinese cultural place. By showing their culture, the country gave tourists to special experience.

First time I was disappointed, because I think that the class was economics. However, I could understand easier than I thought. I lived china for 2 year, in my case also have remained deep impression about china’s culture. In addition, I realized that using culture can be good affect to economics, such as tourisms.

Course Name: Economics 201- Principles of Microeconomics
    Professor: Michelle Sheran
    Date: March 25, 2009
    Time: 11:00 – 11:50 am

    Summary of class:
The main idea of this class is to understand the concept of taxes in the economy. First, this class discusses about the taxes incidence and who is responsible of the tax. Therefore, the tax drives a wedge between the buyer’s price and the seller’s price. Also the teacher used economics models with demand and supply to explain how the taxes can affect buyers and sellers. Professor Sheran also explained that the taxes is going to changes the price and depend to the elasticity decide if sellers should pay more or less than buyers. Finally, the market and not the government need to decide the price of the tax. She kept the topic open to explain about the elasticity the next class. I really enjoyed this class a lot; I am looking to know more about this class.

    Time: 11:00 – 11:50 am

    Summary of class:
The main topic of this class was Taxes incidence and elasticity. Professor Sheran used models to explain that the taxes burden falls more heavily on the relatively more inelastic side of market. Thus, in an elastic economy the buyer is easier to escape to taxes than inelastic. Also, the taxes lower the equilibrium quantity. Therefore, since the equilibrium quantity is lower than the efficient quantity (where MB=MC), there is a DWL (dead weight lost). In the same way, she developed a formula where Tax revenue = Tax x Quantity. Finally, she explain that the idea of the microeconomics in the case of taxes is maximized the profits of the consumer and producer without super plus.

    Summary of class:

The mean idea in this class was Externalities. Professor Sheran explains us what externality is, and how divide is. I learned that exit two types of externalities: Positive or negative. Also, an externality is an uncompensated benefit or cost that an individual or firm confers other. To explain this topic, the professor used economic model with demand and supply, and she gave to us some real examples to understand the topic. Finally, professor explained the Coase theorem. The purpose of this theorem is to understand the property right to reduce the cost of transaction when exist an externality. I enjoyed the class, and I learn a lot. Thus, my professor project it was about this topic.

    Summary of class:

In this class we discussed about Cash Flow. Cash flow is the lifeblood of any organization, and is the money that comes in and goes out. Therefore, the companies can have cash flow positive and negative. In this class professor Erba took a long time to answer an exercise about cash flow. Finally, he gave to us the solution, and he explained the concept of depreciation. Depreciation is how much one product month by month depreciate, and it price will be less. Although a lot of time of the class we developed an exercise I could enjoyed and learn some new concepts of this topic.

    Summary of class:
In this class we discussed about social enterprises. Social enterprises are social mission driven organizations which trade in goods or services for a social purpose. At the same time, the main goal of these enterprises is to accomplish environmental and financial success. In other words, they focus in creating products trying to make less environmental impact as possible. Then we talked about a social enterprise called “Honey care Africa”. This organization is in charge of producing 100% natural hand-made honey and is located in Kenya. Honey Care Africa is member of the Fair Trade Organization that helps low budget organizations to trade their products for equipment, helping them to succeed in a big competitive market. In addition, the class discussed about how social enterprises have to work and what are the advantages and disadvantages. Finally, Entrepreneurship can be very difficult but if people use the correct knowledge they can make a strong business and I am really looking forward to do that.

Course Name: Sales and Marketing Management
    Professor: Nicholas C. Williamson
    Date: April 14th, 2009
    Time: 10:00 – 11:30 am
    Summary of class:
The main topic of this class was “experienced vs. inexperienced salesmen”. The professor explained to us the benefits of the people that have more experience than people that have lack of experience. To illustrate his idea, he gave us an example that helped the class to comprehend his point. He said that if an experienced person’s sales are more than $1,500.000 his commission will be $600.000 and a person whose sales are $500.000, his commission will be equal to 150.000. Then the professor gave us 3 tips for selling a product. He said that the salesman should always shake hands, have visual contact and speak clear and finally talk about the advantages and benefits of the product. He mentioned that you should never star talking about your products financial or economical reliability because this can bring tension or stress in the conversation. In addition, the professor said that motivation is the most important thing inside a company, because salesmen would feel more confident and secure of themselves when they try to sell a certain type of product. Another fact that he mentioned that the government has only 10% sales people. In conclusion, I enjoyed this class a lot! This class was great, now I have a little knowledge about sales and marketing. Definitely this class will help me later in the future.

    Professor: Anatoly Miroshnichenko
    Date: April 9th, 2009
    Time: 11:00 – 12:15 am
    Summary of class:
In this topic the professor discussed about the answers of the second exam. However, while he was explaining the answers; he made a summary of all the topics. First of all, to answer the first point of the exam he mentioned that the mass of the Sun is 〖2.13〗^30 Kg, the gravity is 10 m/s2, and the formula of force of gravity is = G Mm/r2. Also, acceleration is change in velocity. After that, he showed the Newton second law, and this is Force = mass x acceleration. Finally, he developed the formula and wrote the solution. Moreover, he continued explain and develop the other points of the exam. I could understand some concepts. For example: Is impossible fin some star with more than 100 supermass, and the reason of that is fusion. Also, some stars have a PP change, which is defined by the main sequence change in all masses of stars. Finally, the professor explained about red stars and supernova. This class was an excellent class, before the class I didn’t know anything about galaxies and stars. However, I enjoyed this class so I went to the same class the next day.

    Summary of class:

In this class we discussed two topic “super stars and the Milky way Galaxy”. First, Pulsars stars are the faster Newton stars. In the same way, they are a neutron star which emits beams of radiation that sweep through the earth's line of sight. Like a black hole, it is an endpoint to stellar evolution. Therefore, the pulses have a high radiation. After that, we were talking about Milky Way galaxy. Thus, we live in that galaxy and the word is from “galactor” that in Greek mean milk. Also, this galaxy contains 100 billion stars, and his disk size is 100.000 light years. In the end of the class, we watch a video about Milky Way. Although the professor used technical words, I learned a lot in this class and I discovered that I liked the astronomy.

    Summary of class:
The main topic of this class was “Present value and the best way to save money for retirement”. First of all, the professor said that Time is money, and is important understand the concept of present value because is useful in different cases. For example: Start a new business, or safe money. Therefore, the professor gave us an example to understand present value in finances. Second, we were discussed about the most economical returned. The professor gave us different examples to understand the 401-K and the normal savings. Also, he explained that in case of I am owner of my own business I need to analyze what type of return and a range of money I am going to use. Thus, he showed us that the best way is 401-k. Finally, he advised us that never we put our money away before we have it. I liked this class, and I understood the basic concept. In the same way, the professor tried to explain 2 or 3 times the different examples to made his sure that everybody understood the topic. Excellent class I recommended 100%.

    Student Name: Carlos Arcila Barrera
Course Name: The United States to 1865
    Professor: Kevin L. Crowder
    Date: April 22th, 2009
    Time: 18:00 – 20:50
    Summary of class:
In this class we watched a video called “Civil War”. This movie explained the causes, develops and effects of this war that in the United States was an important to allow the slavery and create rights for the black people. Therefore, the civil war was in 1861 to 1865, and was the result of decades of sectional tensions between the North and South. Focused on slavery and states rights, these issues came to a head following the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Over the next several months eleven southern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. During the first two years of the war, Southern troops won numerous victories but saw their fortunes turn after losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in 1863. From then on, Northern forces worked to conqueror the South, forcing them to surrender in April 1865. In my opinion sometimes the history is boring. However, this movie wasn’t a typical documental so it was an excellent movie with pictures and sources of these ages. I liked a lot and I got knowledge about The United States.

    Class Visitation Report

This class was about creditor’s right and bankruptcy and consumer protection. She told that creditors have a right to sue to get back the money if debtors don’t pay back the money. However, creditors should have a contract, if not it will be hard to get the money back. There are several ways to do that. Moreover, she focused on consumer protection. She said that customers are protected by states laws. For example, if you buy thing which has alleged that children can use. But in fact, it makes damages to children, so that customers have a right to claim for what they should have. This is quite easy for customers because there is a website that customers can go through directly and claim for customer’s rights. And also she talked about telemarketing and electronic advertising. These kinds of marketing makes some people are uncomfortable because customers are reached even they are at home. Customers have a right to avoid being called by calling FTC, so that customer’s name will be taken off the lists. Furthermore, customers have a right not to pay for the things that are sent to the house such as on during Christmas days some people will get the gift from unknown company which customers do not order, so customers don’t have to pay for it.

He just started from what he left and went on and on. I was putted a lot pressure in this class. I could have been understood about what he taught but I didn’t. I think it might because most of the time he mentioned about to history in its country which more than 10 countries that he told.

This discussed the book about God and Jesus. Jesus was a life giver. God created Adam. Jesus was a messenger from God. If someone point at the moon, you have to look at the moon, not the finger. It was the same way to explain Jesus, who was a messenger. But Christians look at Jesus, God’s message. There were two things to explain Jesus, God and full humanity. Moreover, about Jesus’ humanity, he talked to women and close to them, close to horrible people and broke all the rules or barrier.

This is a good tip, divided your meal and keeps them for snack. So you won’t let yourself be very hungry, and then find fast food to eat to fulfill your hanger.

    Summary:
When I received email from professor, I was happy. Because, I have learned about course of contemporary mathematic, I thought that it was easy understand to me. It was true. In fact, the class was not required for high English skill. Therefore, my feeling was very comfortable during the class.
Topic of the class was about “compound Int” I learned that what compound is and how some questions solve. As I mentioned that most chapters in the mathematic’ book was I already studied. Although I didn’t prepare anything, I could understand. However, when I was listening lecture, I understood perfectly, but the professor gave us time to solve about some questions, I could not answer easily. That’s why, I could not understand what question’s meaning is.

    These are Examples of Questions,

    Ex)
    1. Find total amt after 8 years for a $ 400 investment 4.59% compounded daily.
    2. Personal value: I want to retire in 20 years with $ 200.000 Investment pays 7.5% compound quarterly. How much must uest now?
    3. Find annual percent yield (APY)

Class was interesting and I could meet another Korean student. When I was high school student in Korea, I didn’t realize why I had to study math. However, these kinds of topics are very useful to live modern society. In addition, math can help understand to others subjects. Therefore, I asked professor that attending class once again, so I was permitted.

    Summary:
I attended math class again. Through attending this class, I realized that being professor is need extremely hard effort. The reason why I thought like this is that the Dr Walker, made a lot of examples questions in directly to make clear for students who not understand clearly. The topic of the class was related on last class, he gave a lot of questions for us. “APR” is that Installment loans, fixed pate – table 11.2. In addition, I learned what APR is and way to change from Finance charge to calculate finance charge.
The meaning of Finance charge is that total amt, the borrowed pays to use money borrowed. In addition, Calculate finance charge is that total paid – cost price.

    Ex) Appliances cost $ 2900
Pay 20% down, and 24 monthly payments.
    APR=8.5%.
    Find monthly payment!

Important thing to solve this chapter’s questions is that I have to understand what questions want, because some questions asked total price while the other one asked monthly payment. By solving a lot of questions, I knew exactly, that compound Int is.

    Summary:

A lot of old students, who attended in C/S 5 before, have recommended on Psychology class. I understood what their meaning is. This class was the most interesting among others classes which I have been. Almost 100 students were taking this class, so the professor Delaney was walking around in class room to make every students hear clear of his voice.

Topic of this class was about “Psychological Disorders: Schizophrenia” it was interesting. I could guess the meaning from in my dictionary. According to Dr Delaney, Schizophrenia is possible causes, firstly, higher risk if there was flu epidemic during the middle of their fetal development. The other reason was that elevated dopamine levels in seine parts of the brain. In addition, he mentioned that many genes identified that increase risk for schizophrenia, and no single gene causes it.

Second topic of class was Schizotypy. He said that some evidence that schizophrenia may have a sub-clinical version called schizotypy. In addition, people high on schizotypy are more likely to show schizophrenia later in life. For example,
    1. Often interested in “weird” things even if they don’t believe in them.
    2. Often show social withdrawal.

I remember that “JIA Hui”, who is classmate, did presentation about Melancholia. Both of them can bring serious result.

Thanks for professor permitted to me what came again this class. The reason why, I tried to attend class at least twice was that I really wanted that not only just attending but also understanding and learning about topic of class. I thought that if I just participated onetime only, it was hard to say that I understood about topic of each class. For I was bothering the professor, I could participate in General Psychology class again.

Last class, his lecture was about “Schizophrenia”. This class’ topic was treatment of disorder. He showed us some slides about types of therapies. First one is that “Biomedical therapies”- treat disorders as physical diseases. The other treatment of disorder is “psychotherapies”- discussing your situation with another person. He also showed us many kinds of therapies. Among them, he emphasized that “psychosurgery”, by removing parts of the brain. It means, by cutting connection between frontal lobe and rest of brains, can treat mental disorder. The reason why, he emphasized this therapy was it is not good treatment. That’s why the surgery is not proof clearly until nowadays. Furthermore, even though, the surgery will be successful, finally it makes some errors in person’s, who got operation, brain.

In fact, some slides and video made me scared, because people who are showed in the video are not normal people. Through this class, I knew that kinds of treatment of disorders.

However, when growing up, I have disappointed why I did not my best for piano class, because I realized that piano make my feeling better. Thus, I determined that attending music class.

I was not in trouble in getting the main points of the class on that day. The steps of the class are those. Firstly, listening the music, and play the piano who want to play in class or pointed by professor. Finally comparing between famous artist and student’s that. The topic of music was symphony. Most of them, I didn’t know that symphonies’ names, but I definitely remember that “Mozart No, 40 K, 550 G- minor written by Mozart” I was really surprised when professor was explain about this symphony, because when Mozart was writing this symphony, he had never fix the musical score and stop. According to Professor Mood, this symphony is totally different others Mozart’s music. Basically, his music are cheerful. However, the symphony which is no. 40 was very gloomy.

Although, I cannot play piano very well I really like to listen these kinds of symphonies.
The music class made my heart warm.
